Come Clean, Horelma

Mikhail Gorbachev is the latest to be drawn into the absurd story of the $97 million sale of London's Toprak Mansion. Last week, the former Soviet leader was feted at the 23,000-square-foot house by the real estate agent who sold it to a person he calls Hourieh Peramaa, supposedly a Kazakh refugee who fled the Central Asian country at the age of 17 in 1950 or 1951. Her husband is identified as Horelma Peramaa.

Here's how Kevin Sullivan at The Washington Post describes the party and a Persian beauty who is identified as Hourieh's daughter-in-law: Yassmin, 33, an elegant and towering woman in a remarkable red "hello, boys" dress, worked the room but politely declined to comment when approached by a reporter.

All right, folks, does anyone know a Kazakh named Hourieh? Why does this woman never speak? How did she cross one of the most secure borders in the world during Stalinism?

And who really owns that mansion?

steve, the only solution is for you to buy the house next door and keep a close eye on the neighbours!

Steve,

The woman says her name was misspelled. I'm convinced that Hourieh Peramaa is not a misspelled name. It's a totally fake name.

The lady says she left Kazakhstan for Iran and then onto Britain. Bureaucrats in both of those countries are well familiar with names that originate from that region. South Asia, Central Asia and Iran have a lot of common names. And the British know those names because they were running India for quite a while. It's like saying immigration officials at Ellis Island misspelled an Irish or Scottish name to the degree it became unrecognizable.

And, of course, there is the question that you raised. How was she was able to travel across the borders in 1950? Beria was still running the secret police. At that time you probably couldn't travel far beyond your hometown without being questioned by the police.

Most people who have rich life stories write biographies and sell film rights to their stories. Especially, when they are at the old age of 75.

But this woman hides from publicity. Has anyone seen her? All the news reports talk about her daughter.

Steve,

People use the dull and usual as their cover. But they don't try to hide behind the unusual.

I bet this whole show's goal is precisely to gain publicity. If the opposite was the objective, then the buyer could have easily made the purchase to appear as done by one of the many Russian millionaires. Russians buying expensive homes in London has become such a commonplace image that nobody would have paid any attention.

By setting up this elaborate, exotic and obviously fake story, the buyer has create an intrigue. I bet the buyer is one of the thousands of rich Russians who is merely seeking attention. This whole thing has nothing to do with Kazakhstan. One day the buyer will come forward to enjoy the limelight.

And who really is our 'hello boys' woman?

I have to say that my suspicion still lies in the usual Kazakh suspects. Either that, or Sacha Baron Cohen.
